Google Messages borrowing a key WhatsApp feature: @ Mentions are coming

This feature enables users to tag specific individuals within group conversations by utilizing the "@" symbol

According to Android Authority, Google Messages is developing a new “Mentions” feature aimed at enhancing the group chat experience for users. This information comes from an APK teardown of the latest beta version of the app, revealing indications of this upcoming functionality.

The “Mentions” feature, similar to those found in messaging platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram, would enable users to tag specific individuals within group conversations by utilizing the “@” symbol. In WhatsApp, for example, tagging a group member directly not only draws attention to the mention but also ensures that the tagged individual receives a notification, thereby preventing them from missing important messages. This capability could be significant in fast-paced group discussions where messages are easily overlooked.

This marks the first instance of “Mentions” being referenced in the Google Messages app, although the exact mechanics of the feature remain unclear at this stage. As the code does not provide explicit details on functionality, further investigation into upcoming app updates will be necessary to determine how the feature operates when officially released.
