Apple is developing advanced health features for its next generation AirPods Pro, potentially including heart rate monitoring and temperature sensing. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported in his Power On newsletter that these capabilities may be integrated into the AirPods Pro 3, which are currently in early stages of development.

Apple develops health features for AirPods Pro 3

Integrating heart rate monitoring into AirPods would broaden access to health and fitness data for users who do not own an Apple Watch. While Apple’s internal tests indicate that heart rate accuracy currently favors the Apple Watch, Gurman noted that the accuracy of the readings from AirPods is “not terribly far off.” This move aligns with Apple’s broader strategy to expand health-tracking capabilities across various devices.

Additionally, the upcoming Powerbeats Pro 2 will feature heart rate monitoring, designed for workout tracking. The integration allows users to connect the Powerbeats Pro 2 to gym equipment, like treadmills, to display heart rate data seamlessly within the Health app and other compatible apps on the iPhone. With a scheduled release in 2025, this marks Apple’s continued commitment to fitness-oriented technology.

Apple to release Face ID-powered home security devices

As for AirPods Pro 3, Gurman mentioned that while the heart rate monitoring feature may be ready sooner, other enhancements are still in the planning phase. A longer-term ambition for Apple includes adding small cameras to future AirPods to facilitate various AI-driven functionalities. This initiative, identified as a company “priority,” suggests that significant advancements may take additional years to materialize.

In summary, Apple is poised to enhance its AirPods lineup with notable health features, improving user accessibility to fitness data. While the exact launch date for the AirPods Pro 3 remains unclear, ongoing tests and developments indicate a shift toward more integrated health solutions in Apple’s ecosystem.
