Deep Learning Specialists Metamind Pick Up $8M Backing to Make AI Tech Easily Available

MetaMind, a startup that delivers Artificial Intelligence enterprise solutions, launched last Friday. Through its AI platform and Smart Module offerings, Metamind can predict outcomes for language, vision and database tasks, to deliver “best in class” accuracies on standard benchmarks.

Backed by Khosla Ventures and Marc Benioff, the outfit has secured $8 million in funding. What is more interesting is the fact that Khosla operating partner and CTO Sven Strohband is its co-founder and CEO. Together with co-founder and CTO, researcher, Richard Socher and a team of data scientists, this Palo Alto based firm also has veterans in natural language processing, Chris Manning of Stanford and Yoshua Bengio of the University of Montreal,  as its advisers.

Vinod Khosla, Founder of Khosla Ventures, applauded the efforts of the startup :

“I am very impressed by the depth of skills that MetaMind has assembled and its fast progress to match and even outperform the field on machine learning benchmarks to date. The team’s breakthrough work on deep learning algorithms and architecture is remarkable, and I’m excited by the ongoing brainstorming into the myriad of possible use cases that could make machine learning broadly accessible to high-value business users.”

Deploying deep learning as a service to companies in industries like consumer goods, financial services and medicine the company believes it can help radiologists identify cancer, insurers assess houses and nutritionists label food, reports Recode.

“We call it ‘drag, drop and learn,’” explains Strohband. “All you need is a Web browser, and you can use deep learning technology.”

MetaMind will make available ‘simple interfaces for predetermined tasks.’ According to Strohband most users will be more interested in what technology does for them,’ writes Gigaom.

“I think people, in the end, are trying to solve a problem,” he said.
