Shipment and Logistics service provider UPS is the latest to have been affected by an online security breach.

Chelsea Lee, a spokesperson for the UPS said on Wednesday that 51 of its stores in 24 different states throughout the US had been attacked by a malware, exposing information such as names, card numbers and postal and email addresses from about 100,000 transactions between Jan. 20 and August 11.

The US Department of Homeland Security informed a number of enterprises which include a hospital chain, US grocery chain SuperValu and UPS about the breach on July 31 and although it wasn’t detected by active anti-virus software, any fraud that may be related to this breach has not been reported.

Tim Davis, President of The UPS Store, said, addressing the franchise owners, “We encourage you to remain vigilant by reviewing your account statements and monitoring your free credit reports.” Since the UPS franchise is individually managed, owners are held accountable for installation and upkeep of its own network. “Our customers can be assured that we have identified and fully contained the incident,” he said.

Apparently the affected stores were not linked electronically, and the service carrying out investigations for the same. UPS will be assisting affected customers with identity protection and credit monitoring.
