Amazon is launching “Alexa for Shopping,” a dedicated version of its virtual assistant for all US customers in the coming week. This service will be available to users without requiring a Prime membership or an Echo device. Customers can access Alexa for Shopping via the Amazon mobile app or directly on the Amazon website.
Users can engage with Alexa for Shopping by tapping the Alexa icon in the mobile app or website, or by typing questions into the search bar. According to Amazon, the new assistant combines the personalized capabilities of Alexa+, an upgraded version of Alexa powered by generative AI, with the expertise from Rufus, the company’s previous shopping assistant introduced in 2024.
Alexa for Shopping tracks user interactions across Alexa-enabled devices and integrates shopping and browsing history to provide tailored purchasing suggestions. In addition to shopping queries, it can answer questions unrelated to purchases based on previous interactions.
Examples of Alexa for Shopping’s functionality include assisting users in brainstorming ideas for school projects, providing troubleshooting tips for appliances linked to past purchases, and advising on laptop specifications. The assistant can also suggest age-appropriate gifts based on user input about important dates.
The assistant can compare multiple items from search results, display the price history of selected items over the past year, and facilitate routine purchases. It can automatically add frequently purchased items to the cart and create shopping guides that compare features, prices, and customer reviews.
Usage of Alexa for Shopping requires users to be logged in to their accounts, as it relies on access to their profiles and shopping history. Additionally, Amazon is enhancing Echo Show devices, enabling a more robust Amazon experience with larger screens designed for product search and browsing.
