Spotify has launched a feature enabling users in the U.S. and the U.K. to purchase physical books through its app, in collaboration with Bookshop.org.
This initiative positions Spotify as a competitor to major booksellers and is part of its strategy to improve profitability. In line with this, Spotify has been increasing subscription prices in the U.S. and Europe and recently reported having 751 million monthly active listeners.
The book purchasing feature currently operates exclusively on Android devices, with iOS support expected next week. Users will see a “Get a copy for your bookshelf” button on audiobook pages, linking to Bookshop’s website for transactions.
Spotify has also expanded its “Page Match” feature, which now supports over 30 languages, including French, German, and Swedish. This technology allows users to scan a page from any physical book to find the corresponding audiobook segment. Since its launch for English books, Spotify reported that Page Match users stream 55% more audiobook hours weekly, with 62% of Page Matched titles never being streamed by those users before.
Additionally, the platform has rolled out “Audiobook Recaps” on Android to help users quickly get back into stories by providing audio summaries based on their last listening points. The “Audiobook Charts” feature has also launched in Germany, aiding users in discovering popular audiobooks.
