Amazon announced a merger with satellite internet provider Globalstar Inc. to enhance its satellite network, Leo, which competes with Starlink.
The merger aims to expand Leo’s operational capacity and allow for direct-to-device connectivity, particularly for supported iPhone and Apple Watch models. This collaboration with Apple will persist as Leo’s network develops, further enhancing future satellite service offerings.
Globalstar provides satellite connectivity for emergency features on compatible Apple devices. Apple owns a 20 percent stake in Globalstar, acquired for $1.5 billion in 2024. However, this ownership stake was not mentioned in Amazon’s announcement.
The direct-to-device service from Leo is projected to be operational by 2028, with the merger expected to finalize in 2027. Amazon is also seeking a deadline extension from the FCC, as it must launch a total of 1,600 satellites by July 2026 but currently anticipates having only around 700 satellites operational by that date.
