Amazon is considering terminating its contract with the United States Postal Service and developing a competing nationwide delivery network, as reported by The Washington Post. The existing agreement expires in October 2026, with negotiations stalled due to President Trump’s efforts to privatize the USPS.

The partnership has enabled Amazon to distribute packages through the USPS for years. Under the current terms, Amazon provides billions of dollars each year to the agency. This financial contribution represents approximately 7.5 percent of the USPS’s projected revenue for 2025. The arrangement has been integral to Amazon’s logistics operations, allowing the e-commerce company to reach customers across the country efficiently.

Discussions for renewing the contract began months ago but have encountered significant obstacles. President Trump’s initiative to shift the USPS toward privatization has introduced complexities into the talks. This political development has created challenges for both parties as they attempt to define the future of their collaboration.

Amazon spokesperson Steve Kelly addressed the situation in a statement. He described the USPS as a longstanding and trusted partner, emphasizing the company’s commitment to continued cooperation. Kelly indicated that Amazon is actively discussing ways to extend the partnership beyond the 2026 expiration date.

However, Kelly expressed surprise regarding recent USPS plans. The agency intends to run an auction for portions of its shipping capacity, a move that caught Amazon off guard. This development introduces additional uncertainty into Amazon’s delivery infrastructure, prompting the company to reassess its strategies.

Kelly elaborated on the implications of this shift. He stated, “So we still have a lot to work through. Given the change of direction and the uncertainty it adds to our delivery network, we’re evaluating all of our options that would ensure we can continue to deliver for our customers.” This evaluation reflects Amazon’s focus on maintaining reliable service amid evolving circumstances.

Amazon maintains an extensive transportation system independent of the USPS. This network encompasses airplanes for long-distance freight, Rivian electric vans for ground transport, and an emerging drone delivery program. The drone initiative has encountered difficulties this year, including a recent investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration into operational issues.

Additionally, Amazon is advancing autonomous vehicle technology through its subsidiary Zoox. This effort aims to integrate self-driving capabilities into future delivery operations, further expanding the company’s self-reliant logistics framework.
