Apple announced that apps distributed in Texas must comply with state law SB 2420, which takes effect tomorrow. The law mandates that new Apple Accounts created in Texas verify users’ ages. Parents or guardians must consent when minors download apps, significant updates, or make in-app purchases.
Developers are required to implement a system that allows parents or guardians to revoke consent at any time. The Texas age verification law was signed last May, but legal challenges postponed its initial effective date of January 1.
Apple began facilitating age verification for iCloud accounts in the UK in March, indicating prior preparation for such geographically-specific requirements. This move aligns with a broader trend of age verification laws being enacted across various U.S. states over the past year.
