Instagram has launched a new live location-sharing feature within its direct messages (DMs), allowing users to share their real-time whereabouts for up to one hour. Announced on November 25, 2024, this update aims to enhance the app’s messaging capabilities and compete with rivals like Snapchat and Apple’s Find My.

Instagram launches live location-sharing in direct messages

The feature enables users to share their live location with either one individual or a group chat. Once a user opts to share their location, only those in the specified chat can view it, ensuring privacy. Additionally, the platform has incorporated an indicator in the chat window to remind users they are sharing their location. Unlike Snapchat and Apple, which offer indefinite sharing, Instagram limits this feature to a maximum of one hour, although it may be revised in the future.

New features, including live location sharing, appear to be a response to previous testing by Instagram earlier this year, where the platform explored ways for users to view friends’ live locations. Notably, Meta-owned WhatsApp has already allowed shared live location features for up to eight hours. As of now, this feature is available in select countries, details of which are still awaited.

Alongside the location-sharing feature, Instagram introduced the option for users to assign nicknames to themselves and their friends in DMs. This functionality can enhance user interaction, allowing for personalization and the sharing of inside jokes, without revealing these names to outsiders, as it remains unique to each chat.

Users can create nicknames by tapping on the chat name and selecting the nickname option. If the nickname is not well-received, users retain the ability to restrict others from changing it. This update signifies Instagram’s focus on increasing engagement and creativity within its messaging platform.

Expanded creative tools in direct messages

Instagram is also rolling out 17 new sticker packs, featuring over 300 stickers for users to utilize within their DMs. This addition aims to enhance communication among users, providing more options for expression. Features such as marking favorite stickers and creating personalized stickers enhance the interactive experience further.

Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, recently acknowledged that messaging features are garnering more usage compared to other functionalities in the app. He stated the intention to prioritize messaging dynamics by experimenting with the positioning of the chat icon within the app interface.
