AI elements are progressively being integrated into top music streaming platforms, providing us with more customized listening experiences. YouTube Music might soon follow suit with a new feature driven by Google Gemini.

A Gemini extension!?

According to Android Authority, a Gemini extension might soon be available for YouTube Music, allowing users to command Gemini to play music via their YouTube Music account. This extension is also expected to enhance music discovery and search results. While this feature is not yet released, it is currently undergoing testing, and Android Authority has discovered a method to enable it.

In a demonstration video included in their initial report, Assemble Debug, an Android Authority contributor and well-known leaker, demonstrated the setup of the Gemini extension for YouTube Music using Google app version 15.17.28.29.arm64.

After the setup was complete, the contributor used voice commands to instruct Gemini to play music. Gemini then searched YouTube Music to find the requested tracks. If the YouTube Music app is not installed, Gemini defaults to playing music through the YouTube web app.

The leaker also posted on X, sharing screenshots from the Gemini Apps Help page. This page lists various prompts that can activate YouTube through Gemini, including standard voice commands such as “Show me some rock music,” “Find [song name] by [artist],” and “Search for songs similar to [song name] by [artist].”

Enabling the YouTube Music extension allows Gemini to access your account data, such as playlists and listening history, to provide more accurate results. With Google I/O 2024 around the corner, it’s expected that new updates to Gemini will be announced at the event. This development could signify a significant advance in Google’s AI integration within its music apps, although it will need to further innovate to compete with Spotify.
