Roblox has launched its age-gated account tiers globally after first rolling them out in the US in May. The tiers are mandatory, and users are placed into one based on their age.
The age ranges for the 3 tiers vary by market. In the US, Roblox Kids covers children aged 5 to 8, Roblox Select covers users aged 9 to 15, and the standard Roblox account applies to everyone else.
The account types are tied to Roblox’s maturity labels for games and experiences. Roblox Kids accounts can access only Minimal and Mild experiences, and chat is not available. Roblox Select accounts can access Moderate content as well as Minimal and Mild experiences.
Roblox Select users can also chat with people approved by parents or guardians. When users turn 16, they move to the standard Roblox account with all of its features.
Users aged 16 and above still cannot access games marked as Restricted. Those experiences are available only to users aged 18 and older. Roblox is also adding new parental control features. Parents or guardians can now block any game until a child turns 16. Previously, users over 13 could unblock content on their own.
Parents can also approve games outside a child’s age bracket on a case-by-case basis. The changes depend on Roblox’s age verification technology, which has faced some problems. Reports from earlier this year suggested that some children were able to bypass the system by drawing wrinkles and stubble on their faces or holding up photos of Kurt Cobain.
