Customers at NatWest and Stripe, a significant US payment provider, were both made aware of issues with some transactions being processed on the Mastercard network. Here is everything you need to know about the Mastercard not working problem!

The FTSE 100 bank said today that some of its clients were having problems using their Mastercard debit and credit cards for purchases, per a statement on its website. The bank said that it was working to find a rapid solution to the problem. NatWest claims that only online payments are affected; point-of-sale transactions for bank customers are unaffected.

However, there are a couple more banks that released similar statements regarding the issue. More than one bank was impacted by the “Mastercard not working” difficulties, which prevented numerous consumers from making online purchases. NatWest notified customers that they may still use their cards to make cash withdrawals from ATMs.

Mastercard not working: Official announcement

As multiple banks were affected because of the issue, Mastercard had to make an official announcement. A spokesman said in their statement that the company is well aware of the issue and they are working to fix it once and for all.

“We are aware of these reports and are looking into them. At this point, we can confirm that transactions continue to flow successfully across our payments network, but some additional services may be temporarily unavailable. As soon as we have additional information, we will provide an update.”

Different banks made different announcements, but the context was obviously the same. As the “Mastercard not working” problem was faced by many customers, and it didn’t only affect a single bank but a couple of them, people expected official announcements made by their banks.

FinTech Explained: Payments

“Some customers who tried to use their Mastercard debit or credit card online may have experienced issues when attempting to make a payment earlier today,” a spokesperson for the bank, which also runs the Royal Bank of Scotland, said.

NatWest banks let their customers know about the situation and that they are working on it. “We are aware that some customers who have tried to use their Mastercard debit or credit card online may have experienced issues when attempting to make a payment,” the bank’s spokesperson said.

Mastercard is reportedly working now

Then, NatWest announced that the issue was fixed, and while some additional services may still be down, the transactions continue to flox successfully, the bank said.

“At this point, we can confirm that transactions continue to flow successfully across our payments network, but some additional services may be temporarily unavailable.

At first, if the problems affected all Mastercard users or only those who utilized NatWest’s banks—including Royal Bank of Scotland, Ulster Bank, and Coutts—was unclear. NatWest thanked its customers for their patience and stated that Mastercard has now fixed the problem. Prior to this, some Mastercard customers had trouble making online purchases since the leader in global payments was having technical issues.
