X has adjusted its algorithm to enhance the visibility of posts from users’ mutual followers, according to head of product Nikita Bier. The update, disclosed on Monday, aims to address issues where friends’ posts appeared less frequently in replies, contributing to a chaotic reply section filled with unfamiliar users.
Bier explained, “We noticed this data was missing from the algo and it made your friends appear less in your replies. This resulted in the reply section feeling more like a battleground with people you don’t recognize.” The algorithm change is designed to create a more community-oriented environment by making it easier for clusters to form around shared interests, which users have requested.

Recently, X has implemented multiple changes to position the platform as a more prominent resource for creators. Earlier this year, the company modified its compensation model to encourage original content creation over aggregation. Additionally, it introduced a video editor earlier this month to facilitate content creation on the platform.
This algorithm update follows similar enhancements made by Meta’s Threads, which has aimed to foster community building to distinguish itself from X. Last month, Threads introduced a “Your Algo” feature, allowing users to privately control their feeds, and reported reaching 500 million monthly active users.
