OpenAI is temporarily lifting usage limits for the GPT-5.6 Sol model following increased demand over the past 48 hours. On Sunday, the company confirmed it would remove the five-hour usage restriction for Plus, Pro, and Business plans, and reset current usage for all users.

“The last 48 hours of Codex and ChatGPT Work have been intense,” OpenAI product lead Tibo stated in a post on X. He added, “[We’re] temporarily removing the five-hour usage limit restriction for all Plus, Business, and Pro plans.”

Morning. The last 48 hours of Codex and ChatGPT Work have been intense! Three important updates:

– Temporarily removing the 5 hour usage limit restriction for all Plus, Business and Pro plans
– Rolling out changes that will make GPT 5.6 Sol more efficient across the board and…

Codex and ChatGPT consume local messages and cloud-based tasks against a shared usage limit. Normally, ChatGPT operates within a rolling five-hour window, along with additional weekly limits based on the user’s plan and model. With the removal of the five-hour cap, users no longer have to halt their work upon reaching the limit.

OpenAI is also enhancing GPT-5.6 Sol’s efficiency, allowing it to consume less usage while managing more tasks. Tibo noted, “[We are] rolling out changes that will make GPT-5.6 Sol more efficient across the board and that will be reflected in less usage being used so that it can take you further.”

The specific method for reducing GPT-5.6 Sol’s usage remains unclear, although it is likely associated with lower token consumption. Additionally, OpenAI has implemented a one-time usage reset, providing users with more capacity for coding and agentic tasks, though GPT-5.6 Sol does not become entirely unlimited as a result.
