Apple Maps will serve as the official navigation system for Ford’s forthcoming electric vehicles (EVs). The software will be integrated directly into Ford’s Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform, facilitating a significant shift towards electric mobility for the automaker.
The integration is made possible through Apple’s new MapKit for Automotive SDK, which streamlines the incorporation of navigation features. The platform will offer users directions delivered in natural language, real-time traffic updates, accident information, and multiple routing options.
Ford will also leverage road-level data from Apple Maps to enhance its BlueCruise hands-free driving system. This initiative marks Apple’s first engagement in supporting self-driving technology, aiming for a more seamless navigation experience.
The UEV platform is expected to support a range of affordable EVs, starting with a midsize pickup truck anticipated for release in 2027, priced at around $30,000. Ford has not disclosed details about subsequent models following the pickup but has released a promotional film showcasing various vehicles, including SUVs and sedans.
Ford has stated that its upcoming electric vehicles will be priced lower than a three-year-old used Tesla Model Y. Demand for cost-effective electric vehicles is evident, particularly following the online buzz generated by a $25,000 EV pickup concept that received significant attention.
