Samsung will release a software update this week for its Bespoke refrigerators, enhancing their artificial intelligence capabilities. This update is designed to significantly improve food recognition and meal planning functionalities in the appliances.
Previously, these refrigerators could recognize about 60 types of fresh foods and around 50 packaged goods, totaling just over 100 identifiable items. The new update, which integrates support for Google Gemini, will increase the number of recognizable foods to over 2,000, requiring users to connect the fridge to Wi-Fi for access to these features.
The software update also expands voice control capabilities, allowing users to ask the fridge about settings, water filter replacements, and troubleshooting assistance. Samsung stated that with the new voice features, users might also receive tutorial playback when needed.
In addition, Samsung introduced a feature called Reliability AI, which monitors fridge components and identifies potential faults before they escalate. A Samsung representative provided an example where this AI could allow remote adjustments to address issues reported by users without requiring in-home service. Users must consent to allow repair technicians to access the health metrics of their fridge.
Early reviewers of the updated software reported significant improvements in item recognition, including niche products and better tracking of freshness levels. The update also prompts users to add frequently used items to shopping lists, making grocery planning more efficient. However, while the AI is more accurate, it still has limitations; for example, it may inaccurately label items or demonstrate overconfidence in its recognitions.
Despite the improvements, there are no visible indicators of Google Gemini on the refrigerator as Bixby remains the only digital assistant available for interaction. Overall, the software update represents a notable advancement in making Bespoke refrigerators more effective tools for grocery management.
