Qualcomm announced the launch of the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 and Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 mobile platforms, aimed at enhancing performance for entry-level and mid-tier smartphones. The Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 will support 90 FPS gameplay for the first time in its series, while Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 features significant improvements in performance and battery life, along with high-level connectivity specifications.
The Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 chipset boasts a 77% increase in Adreno GPU performance compared to its predecessor, the Snapdragon 4 Gen 4. It features 43% faster app launches and 25% less screen stutter, alongside a 10% improvement in power savings, allowing users an additional hour of video streaming.
This chipset introduces Release 17 5G support and Dual SIM Dual Active capability, which enables simultaneous use of two 5G SIMs. The architecture includes two 2.4GHz performance cores and six 2.0GHz efficiency cores. While it supports only Wi-Fi 5, the chipset offers aptX Adaptive for 96kHz lossless music streaming.
The Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 further elevates performance with four 2.6GHz performance cores and four 2.0GHz efficiency cores built on a 4nm process. It provides a 21% improvement in GPU performance over the Snapdragon 6 Gen 4. Notable enhancements for gaming include the Qualcomm Adaptive Performance Engine 4.0, which manages resource allocation during resource-intensive scenes, as well as tools such as Game Super Resolution and Frames Per Second 3.0 for consistent gameplay.
For daily usage, the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 offers an 8% increase in battery life, leading to two additional hours of video streaming. It also features 20% quicker app launches and an 18% reduction in screen stutter. Importantly, the chipset includes “Intelligent Night Vision” technology which enhances photo and video quality in low-light conditions.
Furthermore, Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 supports XPAN, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Release 17 5G, utilizing Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) technology for efficient bandwidth management. Qualcomm confirmed that the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 will be incorporated into devices from OPPO, realme, and Redmi, while Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 will appear in products from Honor and Redmi, although specific launch dates have yet to be disclosed.
