Google has launched an update for its chatbot, Gemini, enabling it to generate files directly from the prompt bar. Users can now create documents by specifying their needs, such as “create a budget,” and then tapping an export button to download the output.
The update marks a significant enhancement in Gemini’s functionality, allowing file generation in various formats including PDF, TXT, RTF, CSV, Google Docs, Google Slides, Google Sheets, as well as Microsoft Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, Markdown, and LaTeX files. This feature should streamline workflows by facilitating transitions between applications without the need for copying, pasting, and reformatting.

LaTeX, a typesetting system crucial for scientific document formatting, is specifically noted for its broader implications. With this update, Gemini’s ability to generate LaTeX files comes in the wake of OpenAI’s recent release of Prism, an app focused on LaTeX journal formatting. Gemini can also generate diagrams in LaTeX, targeting a utility for STEM students.
The new file generation feature is being rolled out to all Gemini users globally, including those with individual Workspace accounts. Google emphasized that this update would enhance user experience by simplifying file transitions across different platforms.
Notably, Anthropic’s Claude chatbot has offered similar file editing and generation capabilities since September, indicating a competitive landscape among AI providers regarding productivity tools.
