Apple is developing AI-powered photo editing tools for iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27, which are expected to launch this fall, according to a report from Bloomberg.
The new capabilities include Extend, Enhance, and Reframe. Extend uses generative AI to create content beyond the borders of an image. Enhance provides AI-driven color and lighting adjustments, while Reframe enables perspective changes for spatial photos.
However, Extend and Reframe may not be included in the initial release due to reported imperfections. This update marks one of the most substantial upgrades to Apple’s photo editing suite in years and aligns with Apple’s strategy to integrate AI into its core applications.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman stated that iOS 27 will emphasize AI features alongside improvements in performance and stability. This photo editing initiative is viewed as a response to increasing competition from Android devices, notably Samsung and Google Photos.
Samsung launched its Photo Assist suite with the Galaxy S26 in February, which features various AI editing capabilities. Google Photos has similarly enhanced its functionalities, introducing generative background changes.
In preparation for its AI advancements, Apple released the Pico-Banana-400K dataset in October 2025, comprising 400,000 curated images to enhance its photo editing models. Additionally, Apple acquired the Pixelmator app in 2024 to strengthen its photo editing capabilities.
This photo editing overhaul is part of a broader AI-focused update for iOS 27, which will feature a revamped Siri chatbot, codenamed Campos, and new Visual Intelligence tools. Apple plans to unveil iOS 27 at WWDC on June 8, with a public release expected in September, coinciding with the launch of a new foldable iPhone.
