Bluesky announced a new version of its app (version 1.121), which enhances photo quality by improving upload size and resolution.

The update increases the maximum photo upload size from 1MB to 2MB, allowing images to render at a resolution of up to 4000px, compared to the previous limit of 2000px. These changes aim to strengthen Bluesky’s position in the competitive social media landscape against platforms such as X and Meta’s Threads.

v1.121 is live! We've increased the quality of photos in posts by doubling the max file size to 2MB and the resolution limit to 4000×4000. Plus, posts with multiple photos now appear in a carousel so you can show off your photography in all its glory.

Bluesky also introduced a swipeable carousel feature to replace its old image grid, accommodating mixed aspect ratios without cropping. Some users, however, have expressed a desire for the option to choose between posting images in a grid or carousel format.

The motivation behind these enhancements is to improve user engagement with visual content. Threads has gained traction among users looking for platforms that support diverse aspect ratios and carousel features for photo sharing.

Since its launch, Threads has become a popular option for posting images, even inspiring developers to create standalone apps for panoramic photo contributions. Although Threads supports a larger maximum image size than Bluesky, the specific details are not outlined in its documentation.

The updates from Bluesky could significantly influence user preferences as they seek platforms that prioritize quality visual content in their interactions.
