PlayStation has commenced rolling out age verification for users in the UK and Ireland, with full implementation anticipated by June. A dedicated PlayStation age verification mini-site has been launched to facilitate this process.
Users must verify their age to access certain features on the PlayStation platform. Options for age verification include facial scans, supplying an ID, or using a mobile number. Some methods may not be available in all countries or regions, and further details can be found in the FAQ section of the new mini-site.
According to a recent update, age verification is essential for users to fully experience PlayStation features. “Age verification is required to access certain features on PlayStation,” the prompt stated.
This move aligns with the requirements of the Online Safety Act implemented last summer, which mandates age verification to protect younger individuals from online risks. Other gaming platforms such as Steam, Xbox, and Discord have already adopted similar measures, with Nintendo expected to follow suit shortly.
The Online Safety Act seeks to mitigate online harm to minors, although its implementation may pose challenges for game developers, particularly smaller studios grappling with compliance requirements.
