Threads plans to introduce a new feature called “live chats,” aimed at facilitating real-time conversations about current events. The feature is similar to Broadcast Channels, which was added to Instagram in 2023.
Live chats will allow users to start discussions with a select group of collaborators who can send messages, while followers can join and interact without posting. This approach could enhance group messaging and streamline event-related conversations.
Connor Hayes, Chief of Threads, announced the feature during Coachella last week, stating, “We want to be this real-time conversation for what’s going on in the world.” He noted that posts within the main feed have limitations for live discussions.
Users could leverage live chats to follow specific events like Coachella, obtaining a focused discussion stream separate from standard feed updates. This capability aims to improve user engagement while mitigating spam and clutter, which were common issues with hashtag discussions on Twitter.
Previous hashtag structures on Twitter allowed users to access real-time conversations but often became inundated with irrelevant content. Threads’ live chats aim to limit contributors, thereby filtering out unwanted interactions and fostering relevant updates.
The effectiveness of live chats will largely depend on the creators leading these discussions. Limiting contributions may affect user engagement, placing greater responsibility on hosts to keep the conversations lively and informative.
While live chats may not replicate the dynamic nature of historical Twitter chats, this structured approach could enhance discussions during significant events. Hayes indicated that the feature would begin to roll out “over the next few weeks.”
