PlayStation 6 expected to launch without built-in disc drive

The rumor comes from hardware leaker KeplerL2 on the NeoGAF forums, though Sony has not confirmed any details about the PS6 or its design plans.

A hardware leaker known as KeplerL2 posted on NeoGAF forums, claiming that the upcoming PlayStation 6 will not feature a built-in disc drive. The information is unconfirmed and has not been officially addressed by Sony.

KeplerL2 indicated that the base model of the PS6 will be equipped with 1TB of internal SSD storage, consistent with the specifications of most current PS5 models. The storage capacity is not expected to improve, likely due to a global RAM shortage driven by AI demands that might also cause delays in the PS6’s planned launch, previously set for late 2027.

This RAM shortage may hinder Sony’s capability to install a larger 2TB drive, which could have been a potential feature for the next generation console. The absence of a disc drive could trigger significant backlash from gamers, especially those who favor collecting physical game copies.

While the PS5 does offer a variant without a disc drive and an optional external attachable disc drive, it remains uncertain if the PS6 will adopt a similar strategy. Despite a predominance of digital sales in the gaming market, many consumers still prefer physical media for ownership reasons and the potential risk of digital storefronts shutting down.

Concerns about the viability and longevity of digital collections may be motivating factors behind gamers’ preference for physical media. If KeplerL2’s claims are substantiated, Sony may face controversy over the decision, affecting its appeal to a segment of the gaming community.
