Reddit is exploring new methods to verify user identity to combat bot activity on its platform, according to CEO Steve Huffman.
The potential changes could introduce additional steps to account creation and posting, impacting user anonymity which has traditionally been a core feature of the platform.
Huffman mentioned biometric authentication methods such as Face ID or Touch ID as lightweight options during an interview on the TBPN podcast. He stated these methods verify “a human presence.”
Other options under consideration include decentralized third-party services that do not require personal identification. More rigorous methods, such as ID-checking services, are also being discussed.
RDDT requiring Face ID was not something I had on my bingo card but something has got to be done about all the fake / botted content — I just don't know how to sell face-scanning to redditors or even lurkers. https://t.co/7e7K3Di4ip

The company aims to balance user verification with its commitment to anonymity. “Part of our promise for our users is we don’t know your name but we do want to know you’re a person,” Huffman said.
Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian commented on X that he did not anticipate Reddit requiring Face ID. Ohanian acknowledged the need to address bot and fake content but expressed uncertainty about user acceptance of face-scanning verification.
The exploration of verification methods follows increasing bot activity across social media platforms, including instances of bots being used for secret experiments on Reddit.
