Spotify launches Taste Profile to let users edit the AI algorithm

Announced at SXSW by Co-CEO Gustav Söderström, the tool aims to fix "algorithm warping" caused by shared accounts, kids' music, or late-night ambient sleep tracks.

Spotify launched Taste Profile, an AI-powered feature that lets Premium users customize their algorithmic recommendations for music, audiobooks, and podcasts.

The tool marks the streaming platform’s latest push to give listeners direct control over curation amid growing competition in the personalized audio market. Taste Profile arrives as Spotify expands its suite of AI-driven features to retain subscribers and differentiate its service.

Co-CEO Gustav Söderström announced the feature at SXSW. The beta will roll out to New Zealand Premium subscribers in the coming weeks, the company said.

Taste Profile displays a summary of user listening habits and includes a “Tell us more” prompt, according to a video demo. Users can request more of specific genres or remove unwanted genres from their recommendations. The feature also processes broader requests, such as upbeat music for training or news podcasts for commutes, Spotify said.

The company emphasized that Taste Profile remains optional. Users can “leave it and enjoy Spotify as usual,” the company stated.

The launch follows Spotify’s Prompted Playlist feature, which entered beta in New Zealand last month. That tool allows specific playlist requests, such as songs from particular TV shows. Prompted Playlist expanded to US and Canadian users one month after its New Zealand debut.

Spotify has increasingly prioritized AI-powered personalization tools. The company competes with platforms like Google, which recently launched Gemini-powered conversational features in Maps, and Substack, which introduced built-in video production tools for creators.
