Netflix reported utilizing artificial intelligence workflows in approximately 300 titles this year, with a significant focus on post-production tasks. According to the company’s shareholder letter detailing its second-quarter financials, the embrace of AI is expected to continue expanding. Projects including “Glory” in India, “Brasil 70: A Saga do Tri” in Brazil, and “The American Experiment” in the United States employed generative AI to produce complex sequences.
The streaming service noted that it previously used generative AI in at least one original show as of July 2022. Netflix is actively pursuing acquisitions and establishing specialized studios to enhance its AI capabilities further. The company’s financial report stated, “We are increasingly leveraging these tools to deliver higher quality output more quickly and at a lower cost than traditional methods.”
Generative AI is capable of producing results faster than human visual effects artists or animators. However, the company emphasized that human oversight is essential to ensure that AI-generated results align with the overall vision of the film or show. Netflix intends to support skilled creators rather than replace complete teams with AI technologies.
The push for AI integration reflects Netflix’s larger strategy in content creation as the technology becomes more prevalent within the industry.
