X users can now block Grok from editing their uploaded photos through a new toggle in the iOS app.
Neither X nor xAI publicly announced the feature, which limits the chatbot’s ability to modify images. The move represents a response to regulatory pressure and widespread criticism of Grok’s image generation tools. The EU has opened two separate investigations into the AI’s creation of nonconsensual sexual imagery.
At the start of 2026, Grok added image generation tools that resulted in approximately 3 million sexualized or nudified images being created within an 11-day period. The Center for Countering Digital Hate estimated that 23,000 of the images generated in that period contained sexualized depictions of children. The new block feature is a simple toggle in the image and video upload menu.
The feature only limits tagging Grok in a reply to create an image edit, according to The Verge. Users can still employ workarounds to generate modified images of uploaded photos. The block does not fundamentally change how Grok operates.
In January, xAI announced limitations on putting real people in scanty clothing. Those measures have had only partial success at best. The company has not announced further protective tools beyond the new toggle.
Neither X nor xAI, both owned by Elon Musk, have offered comment on the new feature. The block is visible in the iOS app’s upload menu but was not disclosed in official release notes. If the company offers only this narrow use case, its claims of a zero-tolerance space for nonconsensual nudity may appear hollow.
