Apple is adding touchscreens to its premium MacBook Pros, set to launch this fall. Bloomberg reports the new 14-inch and 16-inch laptops will feature a Dynamic Island and a dynamic interface. The interface adapts to touch location, pulling up contextual menus. Apple aims to smooth the transition between mouse and touch input on macOS.

The dynamic interface modifies the user experience based on where the user touches the screen. According to Bloomberg, touching an onscreen button prompts the operating system to display a contextual menu offering options relevant to touch commands. This design choice intends to make specific interactions more accessible without requiring precise cursor movements.

Interface elements like the macOS menu bar will automatically enlarge to facilitate finger selection. These modifications address the ergonomic challenges of using a touch display on a laptop form factor. The system includes standard touchscreen capabilities such as smooth scrolling and pinch-to-zoom gestures for images, files, and web pages. A touchscreen keyboard will not be included, as the devices retain physical keyboards.

Both the 14-inch and 16-inch models will feature OLED screens for the first time on a MacBook. This display technology likely enables the inclusion of a Dynamic Island-style webcam cutout. Apple has utilized OLED technology on iPhones, Apple Watches, and the iPad Pro but has not previously brought it to laptops. The transition to OLED represents a hardware upgrade for the display panel.

Windows laptops have offered touchscreens and dynamic interface elements for years, positioning Apple late to this specific hardware feature. However, Apple may be well-positioned to execute the implementation effectively. Modern macOS includes touch-friendly design elements, and the company has invested significant effort in porting iPad applications to macOS. This existing foundation may facilitate a smoother user experience for touch input on the new MacBook Pros.
