Google introduced the Pixel 10a smartphone on Wednesday, priced at $499. The device is available for preorder immediately with shipments scheduled to start on March 5. It comes in four color options: Lavender, Berry, Fog, and Obsidian. The launch introduces new AI software capabilities alongside minor hardware updates compared to the previous generation.

The design of the Pixel 10a features a completely flat back surface. Unlike previous models where the camera module protruded, the camera bar now blends flush with the rear of the phone. This construction ensures the device lies flat when placed on a surface. The physical form factor maintains the familiar Pixel aesthetic while integrating the camera array directly into the chassis.

The smartphone includes a 6.3-inch Actua display. According to Google, this screen is 11% brighter than the display on the Pixel 9a. The device offers faster charging speeds than its predecessor, providing more than 30 hours of battery life on a single charge. Users can extend battery performance up to 120 hours when utilizing the “Extreme Battery Saver” setting.

Under the hood, the Pixel 10a is powered by the Tensor G4 chip. This is the same processor that powered the Pixel 9a, which was released last year. The camera system consists of a 48 MP main camera and a 13 MP ultrawide camera. Google asserts that the 48 MP main camera constitutes the best camera available on a smartphone priced under $500.

Google is expanding its suite of AI-powered camera features to the A-series with this release. The “Auto Best Take” function captures multiple frames with a single shutter press and automatically selects the optimal version to ensure everyone looks good in group photos. The “Camera Coach” feature provides users with step-by-step guidance on lighting and composition to improve photo quality.

Satellite SOS functionality is arriving on the A-series for the first time. This capability allows users to connect with emergency services even when Wi-Fi or cellular service is unavailable. Furthermore, the Pixel 10a includes seven years of software and security updates, matching the support duration offered with recent Pixel phones.

The Pixel 10a lacks the “PixelSnap” magnetic Qi charging feature found on the higher-end Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold. The device is launching just ahead of Apple’s anticipated entry-level phone, the iPhone 17e. The iPhone 17e is expected to cost $599, similar to last year’s iPhone 16e.

Google also announced the launch of Pixel Buds 2a to accompany the new smartphone. These earbuds are available in two new colorways, Berry and Fog, designed to match the Pixel 10a.
