X tests collaborative AI notes for Community Notes feature

Access to the AI drafting tool is currently restricted to the most active and reliable note contributors.

X is testing a collaborative notes feature on its platform, enabling eligible Community Notes contributors to request AI-written drafts from Grok for posts. The initiative addresses criticisms of slow note publication by streamlining the process through community feedback.

The company launched a pilot program last year permitting developers to build dedicated AI note writers for Community Notes. These AI writers proved highly active. X’s Keith Coleman, who oversees Community Notes, described them as “prolific.” One such AI writer produced more than 1,000 notes, each rated helpful by other contributors. This pilot demonstrated the potential for AI integration in note creation.

The new collaborative notes feature builds on that foundation with a more direct mechanism. When an existing Community Notes contributor requests a note on a specific post, the system automatically initiates the creation of a Collaborative Note. This AI-generated draft serves as a starting point for further refinement.

Contributors review the initial draft by rating its accuracy and usefulness or by submitting suggestions for improvements. Collaborative Notes evolve dynamically. X states, “Collaborative Notes can update over time as suggestions and ratings come in.” The system evaluates incoming contributions systematically. It assesses new input from contributors to optimize the note’s helpfulness. Only then does it determine if a revised version constitutes a meaningful improvement warranting publication.

Grok powers the AI writing for these collaborative notes. This choice corresponds to existing user practices on X, where individuals often summon the AI in threads by posting replies such as “@grok is this true?” Coleman indicated potential for broader application, stating that “if it works well, it could make sense to bring the suggestion‑feedback loop to the AI note writer API as well.”

Community Notes has faced ongoing criticism for delayed updates, which hinder timely corrections on misleading posts. Incorporating AI aims to expedite the drafting and approval stages. Coleman highlighted an additional benefit: the feature introduces “a new way to make models smarter in the process (continuous learning from community feedback).” This feedback mechanism allows AI models to refine their outputs based on collective contributor input over multiple iterations.

Access remains limited during testing. Only Community Notes contributors holding “top writer” status can initiate a collaborative note initially. X plans to widen availability to more contributors as the experiment progresses and yields results.
