Tesla launched the 2026 Model Y on its website, introducing a seven-seat version through an added third row available only on the Premium All-Wheel-Drive Long ISP model for an extra $2,500.
The company first teased this seven-seat configuration last year in an email to prospective buyers, stating “seating for up to seven and enough room for everyone’s gear,” as Electrek reported. Images in Tesla’s configurator show the third-row seats with limited legroom, positioning them primarily for children. Tesla describes the seven-seat interior as having fold-flat second-row and third-row seats, without specifying if the third-row folds electrically like the second row.
Tesla offered a seven-seat Model Y in the United States for a brief period prior to a refresh early last year. Following that update, the model became available solely with five seats until this reintroduction.
In August 2025, Tesla released a six-seat “Model YL” variant in China, featuring a six-inch wheelbase extension absent from the United States version. Elon Musk indicated that this Model YL would reach the U.S. market in late 2026 or possibly “never.”
Tesla encounters growing competition within the crossover and SUV segment, alongside a sales decline recorded last quarter.
Updates to the Model Y lineup remain minor and apply exclusively to the Premium version. These consist of a 20-inch dark-grey “Helix” wheel option, a new black headliner, a larger and higher-resolution 16-inch display, and darker rear badging.
