Amazon Music announced on Monday the launch of “Fan Groups,” a new beta feature designed to let users create and join communities based on their favorite artists and genres. The feature, which aims to make the app more social, allows group members to chat, create posts, and listen to music shared within the group.
The new feature is currently in beta and is being tested in Canada on both iOS and Android devices. Users can find Fan Groups via the “Find” tab, located under the app’s main search bar. According to a company blog post, users can explore over 30 initial groups dedicated to various musical interests, from indie rock and country to K-pop and Punjabi music.
Inside a group, members can create new posts, join chat threads, and share songs. A “Music” tab within the group compiles all shared songs, which users can stream individually or as a playlist by tapping a play button at the top of the screen, allowing them to listen without leaving the group chat. Artists are also able to join these groups to connect with their fans and share exclusive content.
A company spokesperson told TechCrunch that anyone can create a new group. Administrators of these groups have the ability to mute members and delete messages. For user safety, members can also report content and block other users.
This move is part of Amazon’s strategy to compete with other music platforms that have been expanding their social features, such as Spotify’s messaging and “Jam” features, and SoundCloud’s commenting and direct messaging tools. Amazon plans to roll out Fan Groups to customers in the U.S. and other markets starting next year.
