A contract dispute between YouTube TV and Fox has surfaced, potentially disrupting subscriber access to NFL and college football games. Notifications were issued by both companies on Monday evening, August 26, 2025, indicating that their current agreement could terminate as early as August 27th at 5 PM ET.

YouTube TV, owned by Google, stated that “Fox is asking for payments that are far higher than what partners with comparable content offerings receive.” Conversely, Fox maintains that “Google is attempting to use its market power to pressure FOX to agree to unfavorable and one-sided terms, prioritizing their own interests over a fair agreement for its customer.” These contrasting statements highlight the core disagreement surrounding the financial terms of the contract renewal.

The channels potentially affected by this contract dispute include Fox News, Fox Business, Fox Sports, and the Big Ten Network. In regions where Fox owns the local broadcast network, the disruption could also impact access to a portion of NFL games. The timing of the contract’s expiration coincides with the start of the NFL season, magnifying the potential impact on viewers.

Awful Announcing reports that the Texas vs. Ohio State college football game on Saturday could be the first major sporting event affected if a resolution is not reached. This game precedes the commencement of week one of NFL games the following weekend. The proximity of these events to the contract deadline intensifies the pressure to find a mutually agreeable solution.

Fox recently launched Fox One, a direct-to-consumer streaming package, adding complexity to the negotiations. This package currently provides access for pay TV subscribers at no additional charge beyond their existing cable bill. The potential impact of Fox One on the negotiations remains uncertain. It is also unknown how the unavailability of Fox News might affect political discourse.

Analyst MoffettNathanson estimates that YouTube TV has 9.4 million subscribers. The potential loss of Fox channels could significantly affect this user base. YouTube TV stated that if a deal cannot be reached, Fox One is an option for consumers. The company will also credit members $10 “…if Fox content becomes unavailable for an extended period of time.” This credit aims to compensate subscribers for any disruption in service.
