OLED MacBook Pro with M6 chip delayed to 2027

Earlier reports had suggested a two-stage MacBook Pro release strategy. The initial plan involved a specific spec-bump update to the MacBook Pro with the M5 chip, projected for late 2024.

Reports indicate Apple’s planned MacBook Pro refresh, featuring an OLED display and significant design changes, may now launch in early 2027, rather than the previously rumored late 2026 timeframe. This information comes from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who detailed the potential delay in his Power On newsletter.

The anticipated MacBook Pro overhaul is expected to include a thinner design and Apple’s M6 chip. The integration of an OLED screen is a key feature of this next-generation model. Gurman noted, “It means I need to see something entirely new if I’m going to get excited about upgrading. And that’s where the revamped MacBook Pro with an OLED screen comes into play. It’s arriving between the end of 2026 and early 2027 and should boast the M6 chip. That Mac represents enough of a change to finally move the needle.”

Earlier reports had suggested a two-stage MacBook Pro release strategy. The initial plan involved a specific spec-bump update to the MacBook Pro with the M5 chip, projected for late 2024. This was to be followed approximately a year later by the comprehensive overhaul, incorporating the M6 chip and an OLED display. However, the M5 MacBook Pro’s release has been postponed to next spring, potentially impacting the subsequent M6/OLED model’s timeline.

Apple has, on occasion, introduced multiple MacBook Pro models within the same calendar year. A precedent for this occurred in 2023, when the M2 Pro/Max 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros were released in January, followed by the M3 Pro/Max versions in October. This history suggests that while a delay is possible, a closer release of distinct models is not unprecedented.

Consumers awaiting this more extensive MacBook Pro revision may need to anticipate a wait of around 18 months. Currently, the base model 14-inch M4 MacBook Pro is available for $1299.
