Blackmagic Design released DaVinci Resolve 20.1, a significant update enhancing spatial video editing, which includes support for content from its URSA Cine Immersive camera and integration with Apple Vision Pro workflows.

Blackmagic Design previously introduced the URSA Cine Immersive camera, described as the first commercial camera system specifically designed for capturing Apple Immersive Video. This camera integrates a double-lens system, facilitating the recording of stereoscopic 3D videos. The initial accompanying DaVinci Resolve update enabled editors to adjust clips via pan, tilt, and roll functions for display on 2D monitors or through the Apple Vision Pro, offering an immersive editing experience.

The new DaVinci Resolve 20.1 update expands upon these existing capabilities. It introduces advanced masking features, allowing users to exclude unwanted elements from immersive shots. The update also provides a more streamlined workflow for converting immersive images into flat compositions, which facilitates patching, painting, and the addition of graphics or text within the immersive content.

Resolve 20.1 incorporates export presets specifically for Apple’s Immersive Video Utility, enabling direct drag-and-drop of final renders into a Vision Pro. A new ProRes bundle option is also available, designed for workflows that utilize Apple Compressor. The update includes native support for Apple’s Spatial Audio Format (ASAF), which allows for immersive sound mixing through Fairlight’s 3D panner system.

DaVinci Resolve 20.1 offers several new features. It adds DaVinci Resolve Studio for macOS support for Apple Vision Pro immersive video workflows. Users can now monitor immersive video directly from the timeline within Apple Vision Pro. The update includes support for Apple Spatial Audio Format (ASAF) and enables monitoring of Apple Spatial Audio in binaural mode with head tracking when using AirPods.

The software now supports editing of Blackmagic RAW Immersive video, specifically content captured with the Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive camera. An immersive video viewer is provided for 2D screens, featuring image pan, tilt, and roll capabilities. The system automatically recognizes Apple Immersive Video, distinguishing between left and right eye content for dual-file stereoscopic 3D immersive media. An option to bypass transitions typically rendered by Apple Vision Pro is included. Users can export and deliver native files optimized for viewing on Apple Vision Pro. This update is available without charge for existing DaVinci Resolve Studio users. Sample immersive clips are accessible for download on the company’s official website.
