Google will cease Chrome support for certain Macs, impacting users running macOS 11, known as Big Sur, due to upcoming changes in browser compatibility announced on its Chrome Platform Status site.
Google’s Chrome 138, the current iteration, marks the final version compatible with macOS 11. Upon the release of Chrome 139, the browser will exclusively operate on Macs running macOS 12 or subsequent versions. This adjustment does not immediately disable Chrome on devices with Big Sur; however, these versions will no longer receive future updates, crucially including security patches. Security patches are integral for safeguarding internet-connected technologies, as they address software vulnerabilities before exploitation by malicious actors.
Google routinely deploys security patches for Chrome, often rectifying critical issues following public disclosure or exploitation, referred to as zero-day vulnerabilities. Continued use of a Chrome version lacking the most recent security patches is not advisable for an extended period. Apple no longer provides security updates for macOS Big Sur.
Mac users can verify their macOS version by navigating to the Apple menu in the top-left corner and selecting “About This Mac,” where the software version is displayed next to “macOS.” macOS Big Sur was released in November 2020. If a Mac is currently operating on Big Sur, users should check for available updates to a newer macOS version via System Settings > General > Software Update. Any version from macOS 12 onwards will support future Chrome releases. If no update is available, the Mac may not support macOS 12 or newer, consequently remaining on macOS 11.
