Google Photos is developing a new generative AI feature, codenamed “Bluejay,” known as Remix, which is anticipated to apply AI transformations to both photos and videos. This feature, detected by Android Authority through an APK teardown of Google Photos v7.34, indicates a focus on creative video manipulation, offering distinct stylistic options for users’ existing content.

The Remix feature is designed to integrate generative AI capabilities into the Google Photos platform, allowing users to alter their visual media. While the application of this technology to still images has been previously observed, new code strings within the latest Google Photos application version explicitly reference “Bluejay Video,” suggesting an expansion of the Remix functionality to include video editing. This development aligns with a growing trend where individuals utilize AI tools to creatively reinvent their personal media, exemplified by recent viral trends involving art style transformations.

An APK teardown, a process of examining an application’s internal code, can reveal potential future features. This analytical method has identified specific code snippets within Google Photos v7.34 that point to the video capabilities of the upcoming Remix feature. The presence of strings directly correlates the internal codename “bluejay” with the external marketing name “Remix” and confirms its intended application to video content:

“<string name=”photos_create_viewbinder_title_bluejay”>Remix</string>”

“<string name=”photos_create_viewbinder_title_bluejay_video”>Bluejay Video</string>”

The second string specifically uses “bluejay” as a placeholder for the “Remix” marketing name, indicating its work-in-progress status.

For video content, the Remix feature is expected to provide several style suggestions, distinct from those offered for photo transformations, which might include options like claymation or anime styles. The identified code strings reveal three specific stylistic choices for video remixing:

“<string name=”photos_editor_bluejay_video_random_style”>I’m Feeling Lucky.</string>”

“<string name=”photos_editor_bluejay_video_subtle_style”>Subtle Movements.</string>”

“<string name=”photos_editor_bluejay_video_wild_style”<Go Wild.</string>”

These options, specifically “I’m Feeling Lucky” for a random style, “Subtle Movements” for a subtle effect, and “Go Wild” for a more dramatic transformation, indicate the range of generative AI applications anticipated for video content. This aligns with the overarching objective of the Remix feature to employ generative AI in transforming videos into various distinct styles.

Google has not yet officially announced the Remix feature, and its public release timeline remains unconfirmed. The current status indicates that the feature is still under development. Therefore, neither a definitive launch date nor an assurance of its eventual availability to users has been provided.
