WordPress announced the formation of a dedicated AI team on Tuesday, signaling a more formal approach to Artificial Intelligence. This new team will guide the development of AI-powered tools and features within the WordPress developer community.
The team includes James LePage, AI Lead at WordPress’s parent company Automattic, alongside Felix Arntz and Pascal Birchler from Google, and Jeff Paul, Director of Open Source at web design firm 10up.
This move comes as WordPress recognizes significant AI experimentation already underway in its open-source community, where developers have created around 660 AI plug-ins. These range from AI-powered template builders and SEO optimization tools to chatbots. The formal team aims to better organize and steer these AI development efforts.
Mary Hubbard, WordPress Executive Director, stated in a blog post that “a unified team stewards AI development thoughtfully, avoids fragmentation, and ensures alignment with the long-term goals of WordPress.”
