Is Roblox selling data? Roblox is making waves with its latest privacy policy update, effective August 7, 2024. The platform will begin selling, sharing, and processing users’ personal data, raising concerns about privacy and data security.

On July 1, Roblox updated its privacy policy to address how it handles user data. The key change is that Roblox will now share and sell personal data for advertising purposes. However, there are some important specifics to consider:

  • Data sharing and selling: Starting August 7, Roblox will allow other companies to use your personal data for targeted advertising. This means your data could be used to tailor ads to your interests based on the information you’ve provided on the platform.
  • Purpose-driven use: According to Roblox’s updated privacy policy, the data shared will only be used to complete specific tasks. The companies that receive this data are only permitted to use it for those designated tasks and cannot use it for other purposes or resell it.
  • Age restrictions: This update applies only to users who are 13 years old or older. Roblox is legally restricted from selling personal data of users under 13, in compliance with child protection laws.

Wait, is Roblox selling data for real?

Yes, Roblox will begin selling personal data starting August 7, 2024, as part of a privacy policy update. This means the ads you see could be tailored to your activities on the platform. Roblox assures that your data will only be used for specific advertising tasks and that companies receiving this data cannot use it for other purposes or resell it.

This update only affects users who are 13 years old or older, as Roblox cannot legally sell data from younger users. You can manage your privacy settings on Roblox or delete your account if you prefer not to have your data shared.

Roblox assures users that although personal data will be shared, it will be used in a controlled manner. The platform guarantees that third-party companies handling the data are contractually obligated to use it only for the specified purposes and to maintain adequate security measures to protect it. This means that while your data may be sold, its use is tightly regulated.

“We may share your information, including Personal Information, with other companies (known as third-party agents, contractors, or service providers). We hire these companies to perform services for us. These companies are only allowed to use the information we share to complete the relevant tasks. They are not allowed to use the information we share for any other purpose, including selling Personal Information. We make sure that all companies that we share information with are capable of looking after the information properly.”

For users concerned about their privacy, Roblox offers options to manage how their data is processed through privacy settings. Additionally, if you prefer not to have your data sold or shared, you can delete your Roblox account entirely. This action will remove your data from the platform and stop any related data processing.

To minimize privacy risks, it is advisable to limit the personal information you share on Roblox. The platform only requires basic details such as your gender and birthday for account creation. Avoid sharing additional personal information in forums or chats to enhance your privacy.
