Say goodbye, Nvidia GTX series are discontinued

Nvidia's shift towards its newer architectures, despite their advantages, marks the end of the road for the older GTX models

The announcement of the Nvidia GTX discontinued arrives against the backdrop of the superior performance of the RTX 30 and 40 series cards. The era of Nvidia’s GTX lineup of GPUs has reached its conclusion, marking an end to a significant chapter in graphics technology. The transition was inevitable with the advent of Nvidia’s RTX series, which brought ray tracing capabilities to the forefront. Reports from China now confirm that Nvidia’s latest product roadmap has officially omitted the GTX GPUs.

Why is Nvidia GTX discontinued?

The GTX series, while absent from the current list of top graphics cards, has historically dominated rankings. The GTX 1080, renowned as one of Nvidia’s most celebrated flagship cards, and the GTX 1060, which remained the most popular card on Steam until recently, are notable examples of the lineup’s success.

Confirmation of the Nvidia GTX discontinued news come amidst the dominance of higher-tier RTX 30 and 40 series cards, which have long replaced their GTX counterparts. Yet, the GTX 16 series managed to persist, offering budget-friendly options for gamers through the GTX 1660 Super and GTX 1650.

Nvidia’s shift towards its newer architectures, despite their advantages, marks the end of the road for the older GTX models. This move was anticipated as the hallmark feature of the RTX series—ray tracing—was not viable on the lower-end models. However, with RTX 4060 cards now available for under $300, the appeal of purchasing a GTX 1660 Super for $200 or a GTX 1650 for $150 has significantly diminished.

A Chinese website, Board Channels, translated by Videocardz, has provided full confirmation of this development, stating:

“According to the Nvidia GPU product roadmap, the GTX 16 series had been completely discontinued in the first quarte of 2024. Currently, all remaining GPU stock has been allocated to AIC brand manufacturers until their inventories are depleted. In other words, Nvidia has officially ceased production of the GTX 16 series GPUs, declaring the historical mission of discontinuing the GTX 1660S, 1660, 1650, and 1630 graphics card. Going forward, neither Nvidia nor the core AIC brand manufacturers will supply GTX 16 GPUs to channel partners. It is estimated that the remaining inventory of GTX 16 series in the market will be consumer within the nest 1-3 months.”

While the Nvidia GTX discontinued news suggests that GTX cards will soon vanish from shelves, some retailers might continue to offer them without discounts for a bit longer. The future might hold a potential revival of the GTX branding as ray tracing becomes a standard feature, not necessitating an additional ‘R’ in product names.

For those looking for the latest in graphics card technology, our guide to the best graphics cards remains a valuable resource. Here, the AMD Radeon RX 7600 stands as the preferred budget GPU, and the RTX 4070 Super is the top recommendation for most gamers.

AI as the backbone of Nvidia

As we reflect on the discontinuation of Nvidia’s GTX series, it becomes clear that Nvidia’s strategic pivot towards AI-driven technologies is reshaping its core product offerings. The introduction of the H200 chip and the practical utility of Chat with RTX AI exemplified how Nvidia is embedding AI as the backbone of its future innovations.

Nvidia’s commitment to AI is evident in its development of platforms and tools that leverage artificial intelligence to deliver unprecedented levels of performance and efficiency. The H200’s groundbreaking memory capabilities and the practical, AI-enhanced assistance provided by Chat with RTX AI were just the beginning. As Nvidia continues to evolve, AI stands at the center of its vision, driving the creation of technologies that not only promise to redefine the landscape of computing.
