There seems to be a recent trend for installations allowing the public to visualise and experience Big Data. Yesterday, we reported on the Chicago: A City of Big Data exhibit, full of interactive exhibits that allow users to see how they contribute to the massive amounts of information generated every day. Today, we’re introducing you to Microsoft’s Infinity Room.

The 15’ x 8’ installation was created by Universal Everything in collaboration with data journalist Simon Rogers. It uses mirrors, choreographed pixel spheres and LED lighting to create a breathtaking and endless digital chasm, to help people visualise the enormity of Big Data. Animations and narrations also guide users through their digital adventure.

The Infinity Room was open for 3 days as part of Microsoft’s 2014 SQL Server launch party in San Francisco. For those of us not lucky enough to immerse ourselves in the Infinity Room, Microsoft have released a 360-degree tour, and a video guide, which you can watch below. We definitely recommend experiencing it full screen.
