OpenAI has made its Codex coding app available on mobile devices starting today, allowing all ChatGPT users to access their coding projects through the ChatGPT app on Android and iOS. Users on the Go and Free tiers can utilize this capability as well.
However, Codex will not be used for programming directly on mobile devices. Instead, the ChatGPT app serves as an intermediary, facilitating access to coding environments set up on a physical device or a remote location managed by the user’s organization. This keeps files, credentials, and permissions secure on the machines running Codex.
ChatGPT can provide updates, including screenshots and test results, while users are mobile. This setup allows users to prompt Codex from their phones, thereby reducing downtime on urgent projects. “Under the hood, Codex uses a secure relay layer that keeps trusted machines reachable across devices without exposing them directly to the public internet,” OpenAI stated. This relay also maintains the active session state and context synced across all devices logged into ChatGPT.
The release comes as a direct response to Anthropic, which previously granted Claude Code users mobile access last fall. It also represents a step in OpenAI’s initiative to create a super app that combines ChatGPT, Codex, and its Atlas web browser into a single desktop experience.
Users can experience the integration by updating the ChatGPT app on their phones and the Codex app on Mac. Support for connecting the Windows app is expected to be available soon.
