Anthropic has doubled its estimate of daily token spending for developers from $6 to $13, according to Business Insider. The update indicates that average costs per developer are now approximately $13 per active day, significantly higher than previous estimates.
The revised figures reveal that 90% of users still incur costs below $30 per active day. In enterprise deployments, costs are set between $150 and $250 per developer per month, according to the Claude Code website. This steep rise in expenditures reflects broader industry trends, with rising demands for computational power impacting both developers and large companies.
Prior archived data indicated that costs for 90% of users were previously estimated at $12 per active day. Tokens serve as numerical inputs and outputs facilitating the functionality of language models like Claude.
Ed Zitron, CEO of EZPR, highlighted the alterations in estimates on X, noting that the increase impacts nearly all users. “Anthropic stealth-tweaked their Claude Code docs to increase the estimated average that a developer would spend a day from $6 to $13,” Zitron stated.
The changes also stress significant challenges faced by AI model providers. Anthropic, alongside hyperscalers, is dealing with heightened demand for compute resources as the popularity of AI technologies escalates.
Users expressed dissatisfaction when Claude Code appeared unavailable to Pro subscribers. Anthropic clarified that it was testing a revised access policy for only 2% of new users. Meanwhile, Amol Avasare, Anthropic’s head of growth, acknowledged that current subscription plans were insufficient for the increased usage and engagement now observed.
“Engagement per subscriber is way up,” Avasare explained. “We’ve made small adjustments along the way, but usage has changed a lot and our current plans weren’t built for this.”
