Initially, Google rolled out Multiview with automatically curated setups, but the new update permits users to choose their streams. The company has stated that this customizable option is a server-side enhancement, meaning it will be available to users shortly without requiring a specific app update.
The Multiview feature may have faced technical limitations related to the transmission and playback of multiple streams. However, users can now expect a more flexible viewing experience with this latest rollout.
In related developments, Google is testing a new ad format for YouTube live streams called “side-by-side” ads. These ads appear at the bottom of the screen and mute the live stream audio rather than stopping it entirely, aimed at keeping viewers engaged during ad breaks.
The side-by-side ad format is currently being tested on both desktop and mobile devices, as Google seeks to refine its monetization strategies for live content. “We guess that’s not the worst idea,” an internal source remarked regarding the new ad format, acknowledging the mixed feelings users might have about losing audio during advertisements.
