Google is developing enhanced interoperability between its AI chatbot Gemini and AI-powered learning platform NotebookLM. The company plans to integrate a NotebookLM button into the Gemini app, enabling users to import notebooks as attachments and apply Gemini’s features for refinement. This follows the recent addition of Nano Banana to NotebookLM.

The initiative aims to streamline workflows between the two platforms, which Google has positioned as complementary tools in its AI ecosystem. Gemini serves as a versatile conversational AI, while NotebookLM functions as a specialized environment for organizing and analyzing information through AI assistance. By embedding the NotebookLM button directly in the Gemini interface, users gain seamless access without switching applications extensively.

Details emerged from a report by TestingCatalog, which analyzed the Gemini app’s code. The publication identified code segments indicating the presence of a NotebookLM button, though the feature remains in early development stages. Currently, it is unavailable to beta testers, signaling that Google is refining the implementation before wider rollout. This approach aligns with Google’s typical development process, where internal testing precedes public release.

One core aspect of the planned functionality involves transferring content from Gemini conversations to NotebookLM. Users would designate a chatbot session as a source material within NotebookLM, bypassing the manual process of copying and pasting text. This direct import preserves context and formatting, reducing errors and time spent on data migration. TestingCatalog noted that while primary use cases center on conversation transfers, additional applications have not been detailed in the code.

A distinct code snippet reveals another integration pathway: importing entire NotebookLM notebooks into Gemini as attachments. This bidirectional capability would allow users to pull structured notes from NotebookLM into ongoing Gemini interactions. Although specific scenarios are not outlined, the feature supports leveraging NotebookLM’s advanced tools within Gemini. These include Canvas for visual organization, Nano Banana Pro for enhanced processing, Veo 3 for generative capabilities, and connectors to external apps for expanded data integration.

Google has not issued any official statements confirming these developments. The absence of announcements means the features’ future remains uncertain, as projects can be altered or canceled during internal reviews. TestingCatalog emphasized that code discoveries do not guarantee public availability, citing instances where similar plans were abandoned.

Parallel to these interoperability efforts, Google continues to expand NotebookLM’s capabilities. Recent updates incorporate Nano Banana, an AI tool for content generation and summarization. Veo 3 Fast-powered Video Overviews enable quick creation of visual summaries from textual inputs. Audio Overviews now support multiple languages and stylistic variations, broadening accessibility for global users. Additionally, a deep research tool assists in synthesizing information from diverse sources, enhancing the platform’s utility for in-depth analysis.
