Nissan has developed a prototype solar panel system for its Sakura electric vehicle, called the AO-Solar Extender. The technology features a larger, extendable panel designed to increase driving distance and power accessories, operating whether the vehicle is parked or in motion.

When fully deployed on a sunny day, the panel can add approximately 1,864 miles of driving distance annually by generating 500 watts of power. In this extended position, the panel also shades the vehicle’s windshield. Nissan stated this feature helps by “reducing cabin temperature and lowering the need for air conditioning power consumption.” This configuration also allows the system to power multiple vehicle accessories simultaneously.

Even when retracted for driving, the solar roof continues to supply power. It produces 300 watts in sunny conditions and 80 watts during rain. This output surpasses the 185-watt maximum generated by the solar roof available on the Toyota Prius Prime. According to Nissan, the roof’s design was engineered to minimize aerodynamic drag and integrate with the Sakura’s existing styling.

The accessory is intended for the Sakura, which has been Japan’s most popular electric vehicle since 2022 and is known for its “sufficient” range, spacious interior, and “cute kei looks.” Nissan has confirmed plans to launch the AO-Solar Extender as a commercial accessory, with further details to be released at a later date. The automaker will showcase the prototype at the Japan Mobility Show, which begins on October 30, 2025.
