According to Android Authority, Google Play Services app version 26.32.31 beta revealed details about phone backups, indicating a new feature that will allow users to select additional folders for backup. This development addresses current limitations in Android’s automatic online backup system.
Current automatic online backup services do not encompass all user data. While photos, videos, settings, and some user data are routinely uploaded to cloud storage, certain information, such as encrypted application data, remains excluded. Notably, folders like “Downloads” are not presently included in the automated backup process for Android devices.

The beta version’s source code for Google Play Services suggests Google is developing a solution to expand backup capabilities. This impending feature will likely provide users with the option to back up their “Downloads” folder, and potentially other user-selected directories. All data designated for backup will be uploaded to the user’s Google Drive account.
Further analysis of the beta version uncovered a specific string referencing “documents.” This string indicates a possibility that Google may implement a system allowing for the backup of only certain file types, rather than all content within a selected folder. Google is actively developing these new backup options.
