The company announced its intention to replace the long-standing blue screen of death with a new black screen. This change pertains to instances of unexpected restarts occurring on Windows computers. This development was formally disclosed in a blog post published on Thursday. Microsoft stated that the objective behind this alteration is to “streamline the unexpected restart experience.” The introduction of this new black unexpected restart screen is scheduled for implementation during the summer season, specifically on devices operating with Windows 11 version 24H2. Microsoft has presented these updates as contributing to an “easier” and “faster” method for users to recover from system restarts.
The blue screen of death, a prominent feature of Windows operating systems, has been in existence since the early 1990s. This historical detail was affirmed by Raymond Chen, a developer who has contributed to Microsoft for an extended period. In addition to the visual change, Microsoft intends to update the user interface associated with these restart events. This update aims to align the interface with the design aesthetics of Windows 11. A further objective of this change is to reduce the duration of downtime experienced during restarts. Microsoft projects that for the majority of users, this downtime will be curtailed to approximately two seconds. The company articulated the broader purpose of this initiative, stating, “This change is part of a larger continued effort to reduce disruption in the event of an unexpected restart.”
A notable event involving the blue screen transpired in July 2024. During this period, the blue screen was widely observed following a faulty update distributed by CrowdStrike. This particular update caused computer systems globally to experience crashes, resulting in the widespread appearance of the blue screen of death.
