Ready for a ChatGPT that truly knows you?

OpenAI is rolling out an upgraded ChatGPT memory for Plus and Pro users that now references their entire chat history across all past conversations for deeper personalization.

OpenAI has rolled out a significant upgrade to ChatGPT, allowing it to reference users’ entire chat history across every conversation they’ve ever had with the platform, starting today for ChatGPT Plus and Pro users.

This new feature marks a departure from the previous “Memory” feature, which could only retain a handful of user-provided facts to personalize responses.

The upgraded system uses two settings to control its functionality: “Reference Saved Memories,” which is the old system, and “Reference Chat History,” the new system that pulls from every conversation a user has had with ChatGPT.

If enabled, ChatGPT will tailor its responses based on the full conversation history, whether a fact was explicitly saved or not.

Critically, the new chat history memory cannot be reviewed, edited, or selectively deleted; it’s either on or off.

The upgrade has implications for user experience and privacy. On one hand, it enables a highly personalized AI assistant that can provide continuity across chats and a more customized experience.

On the other hand, it raises privacy concerns, as ChatGPT will use stored chat logs to shape future responses in ways users can’t easily audit or control.

Users can disable memory entirely or use Temporary Chat, OpenAI’s incognito mode, to avoid storing history.

The rollout is currently limited, with availability in the EU and some other regions delayed due to privacy regulations.
